I just moved into a new house, and there was one box that felt the most high-stakes to pack. Out of everything I own, I felt most protective over our family photos. This was our first move since we had our daughter, so my husband and I just left the house that’s acted as the backdrop for the majority of photos of her from her life so far.
The cost of family photography can be a sensitive topic. Hiring a professional photographer is not cheap! But I know how often my clients tell me that they treasure their photos as family heirlooms, and I feel the same about my photos of Violet.

Family photography pricing in OC ranges from $500-$2,000, depending on what’s included in the package, the photographer’s experience, and the session length.
What’s Included In the Package
This might be shocking, but many photographers don’t include the actual digital photos in their prices! 😂 They might charge a base session fee of $300 but then charge you $1,000 to actually get your digital images. Or they might just give you 20 edited images and charge you to get more, so make sure you know if the package price is all-inclusive or if you need to pay for full gallery access.
Other costs that increase the total price might be:
Credit for professional print products (like framed prints and heirloom albums)
Paying extra to be able to print the photos anywhere you’d like (this is called a print release)
Extra session time
Extra locations
Travel fees
Outfit changes

The Photographer’s Experience
Have they been working as a photographer for two years or 20?
There’s a lot of trial and error in being a professional working family photographer, from working with difficult lighting conditions to helping shy kids feel comfortable to how quickly you can edit and deliver photos.
I’ve been doing this for 20 years and have a master’s and bachelor’s in photography, and I also show my photos in galleries. When a photographer has technical expertise, professional experience, and a creative practice, you’ll feel the difference in the session. They’ll lead the session with confidence, guide your family with ease, and help you relax and feel like yourself.
The Session Length
Family portrait pricing tends to go up in price depending on length. A mini session (15-30 minutes) will cost a lot less than a full session (1-4 hours).
For my in-home family photography packages, I offer 1-hour, 2-hour, and 4-hour sessions. For the 4-hour package, you get to pick a second location, like an ice cream shop or your favorite park. The more time we spend together, the more of your life I am able to capture, and the more comfortable the family will get.
My Rates as an Orange County Family Photographer
My prices for 2026 range from $950-$1,795 based on session length, and each package includes all high resolution digital files and a print credit.
The session happens in your home (my hot take is that family photos should be at home!) and it’s the same cost whether we’re doing family, maternity, or newborn photography.
I used to charge extra for access to more digital images, but I didn’t like feeling like I was nickel-and-diming my clients, so I switched to all-inclusive. I find that there might be some images you might not choose initially but really complete the story, like detail shots of the things I notice around your home.
Certain images might take on a new meaning as time passes, too, and you might not choose something in initial selections but be disappointed later when you don’t have it.
I also include a print credit with every package so you can get that album printed or those photos framed right away. I don’t want your investment sitting on your computer or camera roll forever! I tend to procrastinate printing photos, even though I’m a professional. So I think of the print credit like a pre-purchased gift certificate for yourself.
What Goes Into the Cost of a Family Photo Session
When you hire a photographer for maternity, family, or newborn photos, you’re not just paying for their time. Since we’re business owners and freelancers, you’re paying for our cost of doing business.
Let’s start with the fixed expenses (my finance guy husband would be very proud of me using that term):
Camera, which costs upwards of $2,000, plus camera gear like multiple lenses, memory cards, and batteries
Computer with high processing speeds for large files + extra hard drives
Editing software: monthly subscriptions for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop
Website design and hosting
Gallery software to host photos and deliver them to clients
CRM (customer relationship management) software to send out contracts and collect payments
Email marketing software
Small business accountant or accounting software
Insurance for the equipment and liability insurance for yourself
Continuing education, like workshops and courses
Then we have the labor that goes into each family photography session:

Meeting with prospective clients
Prepping clients before their photo session: I have a max of 20 clients per year so I can dedicate time to each one. Not everyone does this! I’ve had a photographer who didn’t say a word after I signed the contract and just showed up at my house on our scheduled date. I have a high-touch approach — I get to know you, I help with outfit advice, and I guide you on prepping your home for the session.
The photo session: 1-4 hours, plus drive times, which for an Orange County photographer can be a lot!
Editing: 4-6 hours per client
And because most photographers are freelancers, they also need to account for health insurance for them and their family (which is much more expensive when you don’t get it through an employer), a bit of annual time off, sick time, and of course, taxes.
Why Booking the Right Photographer Is Worth the Cost
Even as a professional family photographer, I completely get the desire to go with someone with low rates. If you like some photos in a lower-cost photographer’s portfolio, what could go wrong?
Here’s why a photographer you love is worth the price:
Time is a thief. Your kids will never be this little again. Their missing front teeth, their baby glasses, their hair before it’s ever been cut, their gummy smile— it’s all worth capturing right now. (PS, here’s a blog post on when to do newborn photos, if you need some guidance!)
A high-end photographer knows what they’re doing. They walk into a room and immediately figure out the best light and the right spot to place you, and they quickly set their camera at the right settings for the moment.
The right photographer will help you be able to relax and be yourself. The personality of your photographer matters more than you think. Feeling at ease to be yourself (both you and your kids) will lead to photos you truly love.
Photographers who charge more typically have the credentials to back it up. I’ve unfortunately had many clients come to me who went with a beginner photographer and were unhappy with their photos. They end up essentially paying double to get the photos they want. Trust your gut and spend your money on someone you have full confidence in.
Really good family photographers know how to work with babies, toddlers, and kids of all ages. It’s an art to capture a child’s true personality while managing tantrums, timidness, meltdowns, and a spectrum of moods. Think about when you try to get just one photo of your kid and they’re squirming out of the shot— family photographers know how to work with that energy.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Book a Family Photographer
Ask yourself these questions so you know what you want while talking with photographers:
Do I like them as a person?
Do I trust them to be with my family and bring out our true personality?
Do I align with their approach?
Do I want to be seen in the way that I see on their gallery? A quirky, unposed, real-life gallery is different than a polished, dramatic, magazine-style gallery.
Do I want an all-inclusive package or do I want to pick and choose my favorite digitals?
